Girls Court

Our commitment to victims of human trafficking begins with the youngest victims. Unfortunately, many of these victims come into contact with the juvenile justice system. The goal of Girls Court is to intervene at an early stage in the judicial process, identity those who are being trafficked or at-risk for being trafficked to ascertain their particular needs, and provide wrap around services.

Girls Court was established in 2011 as a gender-responsive approach to addressing the unique challenges faced by girls in the juvenile justice system. A prosecutor and public defender appear before a judge, all specifically dedicated to Girls Court. All parties have in-depth knowledge on the background of each girl. This specialized courtroom allows community-based service providers to support each girl before, during, and after her court appearance.

Girls Court is a partnership with the Court, the District Attorney’s Office, Probation, the Public Defender’s Office, and various other service providers. This partnership creates a courtroom thoroughly familiar with the challenges, needs and strengths of every girl. In addition, every individual is discussed at Safety Net (a weekly multi-disciplinary case management meeting), both before and after her court appearance to discuss and examine her particular needs and how the different agencies can best provide services to her.
